What are the job interviews like to become a police officer? Only people who have gone through it please!?

My friends mom is a police officer and she says that they do a lot of stuff to make sure the people becoming police officers are good citizens. She says that they put you in a lie detector test and ask you if you've ever done any illegal substances and stuff like that. and that they call your old neighbors form when you were young, and your teachers, and your employers and stuff. Is all this true n Canada?
