Becoming a police officer?

I've been looking to join the police law enforcement field and so far what I know is that you have to have your highschool diploma or GED with at least 12 college credited hours and be 21 years of age. HOWEVER, some police departments do not require you to have any type of education. Others do. What classes/courses should I look into to pursue a career as a police officer? What should I do?
