Can I go to College while awaiting Green Card?

My mom will be filing for her Legal Permanent Resident Status this year and she plans to include me as her child; I am currently on F-1 Visa and the Visa officers have said that if I apply, once my F-1 expires I will not get a renewal. If I have not received my green card by the expiration date of my F-1 (2014), can I still stay in the U.S. and study?
